Independent Support Service

From July 2014, Action for Children has delivered the Independent Support Service. Independent Support is a national programme commissioned by the Council for Disabled Children. This national programme provides funding so that the voluntary, private and community sector can employ staff and volunteers to support parents and children/young people through the recent education reforms. This is particularly in relation those transitioning from Statements of SEN to My Plans (Education, Health and Care Plans), those newly entering SEN assessment, and information about personal budgets and the local offer.

The role of Independent Supporters and volunteers is to provide advice, guidance and support to any family or person going through a statutory Education Health and Care needs assessment and those who are transitioning from a Statement of SEN to the new My Plan (Education, Health and Care Plan). This is being offered in group work and one to one support dependent on families’ needs.

Anyone can refer to this service or the Parent Partnership Service but parents and carers are encouraged to self- refer, if possible. The number to contact about these services is: 01380 813393.
