Regional Advice and Support for Parents and Carers of Children and Young People With Down Syndrome

Upsanddowns.JPG
Ups and Downs South West is a Down Syndrome support organisation, supplying information, advice and support to parents, carers, families, friends and professionals throughout the South West region. Ups and Downs Southwest began as a parent support group in 1997 and has always carried at its core, the need and desire to support children who have Down Syndrome and their families to the very best of its ability.

As an organisation, they address issues in both the home and school environments. They provide practical help to enable both home and school to work constructively together, and on many occasions have prevented one environment from undoing the good the other has done. Ups and Downs South West are happy to support individual family members and/or families as a whole. The family includes immediate family members, such as parents, siblings, carers, and extended family members such as aunts and uncles, and grandparents, who may perhaps have an anxious or bleak vision of the future for a child with Down Syndrome and require some happy and optimistic information! They provide training, information and advice to educational and healthcare professionals, such as consultant paediatricians, registrars, community paediatric nurses, midwives, health visitors, obstetricians, schools, teachers, support assistants, special educational needs co-ordinators, educational psychologists and representatives from Social Care.

Their website is full of tips and information, such as toilet training, feeding and oral development, speech and language, questions to ask when visiting schools, transition to secondary, and much more. Their full website can be accessed here: [Website Home].
