Engagement Team - South

Marilyn is a single parent. Having worked as a Thomson Rep and living abroad, including time for a cruise ship company since 2000, Marilyn has now been back in the UK since 2014.

Marilyn’s son was born in the Canaries, and this is where he spent the first 3 years of his life. Marilyn describes her son as her “reason for everything”. Marilyn describes being a mum as challenging, hard, tiring and sometimes so tearful, however, she says the joy that she gets out of those little or big WOW moments truly are the BEST and make it all worthwhile.

Finding out that her son was autistic almost broke her, however, Marlin says she is stronger, more determined and actually a better person for it. Marilyn says that having a child with additional needs meant entering a world that was completely unknown and scary, however what an amazing truly beautiful world.

Having friends here, Marilyn decided on a move to Wiltshire and she has settled well into what is a lovely county. By getting involved in the local area, she has a good knowledge of the area and what is available, and has personal experience of working her way through what can sometimes be a minefield of a system.

Marilyn describes herself as a shocking driver; a lover of cheese and wine. She says she’s a good friend and she’s never short of anything to say. She can't sing but she’d love to, she can't dance but give her a dance floor and she won't leave. She’s either brave or crazy, having done not 1 but 2 parachute jumps both for charity, and would happily do another.

Marilyn has undertaken Makaton training and Autism training, and has started training to run a music and sensory class for babies which is exciting, interactive and fun. She currently runs a small support group that she set up herself. More recently, Marilyn became a volunteer for the WPCC and delivers parenting training as one of the Time Out For Parents’ course facilitators which she absolutely loves.

Marilyn says she thinks that having the WPCC is great. She feels it is important that the WPCC provides a service for parent carers to reach out to that helps and supports the parent voice, and also guides people on their journey by signposting to information, advice and help. Because of this, Marilyn applied to join the WPCC Engagement team so that she could help to enhance and help share the WPCC’s wealth of information and knowledge.
