Changes to Young Carers Arrangements in Wiltshire

The WPCC was surprised to hear from parent carers that they were being informed of changes to current arrangements for young carers, as we hadn’t received any information directly. We have discussed this with Wiltshire Council commissioners and can offer the following clarification.

The WPCC has been advised that Carer Support Wiltshire has taken the decision to deliver the Young Carers service directly, instead of sub-contracting to Youth Action Wiltshire. We have been assured that Youth Action Wiltshire will be working closely with Carer Support Wiltshire to ensure continuity of support for all children and young people currently supported by Youth Action Wiltshire.

We understand that the new arrangements for young carers will take effect from 1st April 2023. Carer Support Wiltshire will be contacting all families who have a young carer currently supported by Youth Action Wiltshire, to provide them with a welcome pack explaining the transition over to the new service. Information about the new arrangements on the Wiltshire Carer Support website says that: “A new service will be launched which builds on the work done with the Young Carer Friendly award. It will offer young carers: -

• 1-2-1 support work
• Support plans for each young carer specific to their needs
• Life skills workshops
• Positive activities that give young carers a break from their caring role”

We have raised the concern with Wiltshire Council Commissioners that were shared with us by several parent carers about the possibility of reduced support for young carers as a result of the change of arrangements and we are led to believe that this will not be the case.

Carer Support Wiltshire has posted further information on their [website].
