Concessionary Bus Pass Scheme - Update

Wiltshire's Concessionary Bus Pass Scheme

Wiltshire Council made some changes to the concessionary bus pass scheme in response to parent carer feedback shared by the WPCC. The changes came into effect end of 2014/beginning of 2015 with the goal of improving the application process for applicants with SEN, who had been finding it difficult to get an agreement, compared to those with a physical disability.

Any person aged 25 or under applying on the grounds of SEN is now automatically flagged up to the manager of SEN Transport who then aims to support accordingly, giving the practical reasons supporting why the pass is needed.

We are pleased to learn that this has resulted in a sharp increase in successful applicants. The use of concessionary passes encourages Wiltshire young people, studying in Wiltshire, to use local services to access their local communities. The addition of a companion pass in some cases also encourages and enables parents to support their children to access public transport where needed and effectively travel train them, preparing them for independent living. The companion pass entitles the person accompanying the young person to free travel as well as the young person themselves, anytime after 9.30am.
