When it comes to leisure opportunities for young people with disabilities or special educational needs, we know that one size does not fit all!
In recognition of this, the Aiming High for Disabled Programme (AHDC) put the transformation of short breaks at the top of the priority list. After an intensive design and development period, involving Wiltshire Council, WPCC and parent carers across the county, we now have a menu of short break options. This was originally called The Local Offer and received national recognition in 2010 – an achievement of which we are proud to have played a part. It is now known as the Short Breaks Scheme.

What has happened so far
Working closely with parent representatives on the WPCC team and colleagues within Wiltshire Council, we first set about consulting with parent carers across Wiltshire in 2008. Their feedback significantly influenced the design and development of what we now know as the Wiltshire Short Breaks Local Offer.
The Wiltshire Short Breaks Local Offer was originally funded with additional money Wiltshire Council received through the AHDC programme. This initiative ended in March 2011 and the WPCC lobbied successfully, both at a national and local level, to ensure the continuation of both short breaks and parent participation. The following video from 2010 shows how short breaks became a central element of the AHDC programme.
